This page provides tax basics for Vecteezy contributors who are not US (United States) citizens or are considered registered aliens, also known as non-US taxpayers.
Tax overview
Licensing your creative content through Vecteezy is an economic activity and as a Vecteezy contributor, the earnings you receive from Vecteezy, calculated from Vecteezy downloads of your files within the US, is subject to US IRS (Internal Revenue Service) withholding tax. The IRS is the US government agency responsible for tax collection and tax law compliance. As a US company, Vecteezy and our contributors must comply with US tax law and provide the IRS with the appropriate withholding tax information, documented in a US tax form. All tax forms are specific to the individual contributor’s situation and are necessary to determine if US withholding tax should be applied on your earnings.
The information in this Vecteezy Contributor Help Center article helps you determine which tax form is applicable to your situation. We encourage you to follow the different steps in the article above and to contact a tax/legal advisor should you need additional advice.
End of year
At the end of each year, we are required to report all earnings derived from US downloads from the calendar year, to the IRS. We’re also required to provide contributors with a year end tax form.
There are two types of tax forms that Vecteezy will issue to contributors:
- the 1099 year end tax form, issued to all Vecteezy contributors who are U.S. residents or U.S. taxpayers, and
- the 1042-S form, for all Vecteezy contributors who are non-U.S. residents or non-U.S. taxpayers.
These tax forms are specifically for contributors who were issued royalty payments by Vecteezy in the previous year.
1099 Year End Tax Form
The 1099 year end tax forms for U.S. taxpayers are fairly straightforward. There are some helpful links over on the IRS website if you’re not sure how to report the royalty earnings on your tax return. Be sure to read through these links carefully if you have any questions. 1099 year end tax forms are typically mailed to each Vecteezy contributor who qualifies (by the end of February).
1042-S Year End Tax Form
For those Vecteezy contributors who are non-U.S. residents or non-U.S. taxpayers, you will receive information about the 1042-S year end tax form via an email from our Finance Team, with details on how to access a secure PDF version of the form.
For security reasons, the 1042-S PDF will be password protected with accompanying instructions in the email on how to access the form. A 1042-S is a U.S. tax form that is completed by Vecteezy and emailed to non-U.S. residents or non-U.S. taxpayers after the close of the calendar year (by March 15). The 1042-S reports the total U.S. sourced royalty income paid in the prior year, and any U.S. withholding taxes deducted. Keep in mind, 1042-S year end tax forms do not reflect non-US sourced income. If you’re unsure if you need to report the earnings reflected on your 1042-S, please contact your local tax professional for further assistance. Note: One form will be sent for each of the earnings types: video, photos, and/or vectors.
